DIAMOND EDUCATION
Everything you need to evaluate a diamond like a professional. No fluff — just the specifications that matter.
The Foundation
THE 4CS
CUT
The most important of the 4Cs. Cut determines how light moves through the stone. An excellent cut grade means maximum brilliance. Do not compromise on cut — a D-color stone with a poor cut will underperform an F-color stone with an excellent cut.
Grade Scale

Excellent or Very Good
COLOR
Measured on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow). The less color, the higher the grade. For lab-grown diamonds, D–F is colorless, G–J is near-colorless. Most buyers cannot detect a difference between D and G with the naked eye.

D–G
CLARITY
Refers to internal inclusions and external blemishes. FL (flawless) is perfect but rare. VS1–VS2 (very slightly included) is the sweet spot — inclusions exist but are invisible to the naked eye. SI1 is acceptable if eye-clean.

CARAT
Carat is a unit of weight, not size. 1 carat = 0.2 grams. A well-cut 1.5ct stone will look larger than a poorly cut 2ct stone. Carat weight affects price significantly — a 2ct stone costs more than twice a 1ct stone due to rarity (or in lab-grown, production cost).

The Comparison
LAB-GROWN VS NATURAL
Chemically identical. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness (10 on Mohs scale), the same refractive index. There is no physical or chemical test that distinguishes a lab-grown from a mined diamond without specialized equipment.
Price difference. Lab-grown diamonds currently cost 60–80% less than mined equivalents of the same grade. That means more diamond for the same budget.
IGI certification. Both mined and lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same 4Cs scale. IGI (International Gemological Institute) is one of the world's two premier grading labs — the same organization grading billion-dollar diamond collections.
Environmental footprint. CVD lab-grown diamonds have a significantly lower environmental impact than open-pit diamond mining. No land displacement. No waste rock.
Resale value. Neither mined nor lab-grown diamonds have strong immediate resale value — the retail markup is the primary cost. Resale value for lab-grown is growing but is currently lower. Buy it because you want the diamond, not as an investment.
Certification
WHY IGI ONLY
The Lab only sells IGI-certified stones. IGI (International Gemological Institute) is the world's largest gemological certification body for lab-grown diamonds. Their grades are consistent, internationally recognized, and accepted by every major insurer. We do not sell uncertified or self-graded stones. The certificate number on your stone can be verified at igi.world at any time.
